EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

is an evidence-based psychological therapy designed to help people process and recover from distressing memories and traumatic experiences. It works by using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation while the person recalls specific memories. This process helps the brain rewire how those memories are stored, so they become less emotionally intense and easier to manage. EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD, anxiety, grief, and other conditions linked to past trauma.

In sessions, bilateral stimulation is typically delivered using an EMDR kit, which may include tactile pulsers (held in each hand), audio tones via headphones, or a light bar that guides eye movements from side to side. These tools help facilitate the brain’s natural processing mechanisms.

EMDR is backed by extensive research and is recommended by mental health organisations both in Australia and internationally. Many people find it particularly helpful when traditional talk therapies haven’t provided lasting relief. EMDR doesn’t require you to talk in detail about the distressing event, which can be comforting for those who find that difficult. Over time, it can support greater emotional resilience, a stronger sense of safety, and improved wellbeing.
